In a world where millions of dogs face the grim reality of being abandoned, neglected, or euthanized, there are few people who dedicate their lives to changing the narrative. Cathy Sewell, founder of Keely’s Dog Rescue, is one of those extraordinary individuals. With a deep love for dogs and an unwavering commitment to their well-being, Cathy has rescued over 900 dogs and counting. Her mission is simple yet profound: to create a world where no dog will ever have to be euthanized and where every dog will have a loving home. This is the story of Cathy Sewell and her incredible journey to save lives, one dog at a time.

Keely’s Dog Rescue was born out of Cathy Sewell’s passion for animals and her desire to make a difference in their lives. Named after her beloved dog, Keely, who was her first rescue, the organization started as a small, grassroots effort to save dogs from shelters where they were at risk of euthanasia. Cathy recalls the early days of her rescue work with a mix of nostalgia and determination.

“I remember the first time I walked into a high-kill shelter,” Cathy says. “The fear and sadness in the dogs’ eyes broke my heart. I knew I had to do something to help them.”

What began as a one-woman operation has since grown into a respected and influential rescue organization. Keely’s Dog Rescue now has a dedicated team of volunteers, foster homes, and supporters who work tirelessly to save dogs from dire situations and find them loving homes. Despite the growth, Cathy remains the driving force behind the rescue, personally overseeing every aspect of the organization.

A Dream of a World Without Euthanasia

Cathy Sewell’s vision is clear: she dreams of a world where no dog will ever have to be euthanized. This vision drives every decision she makes and every dog she rescues. The sad reality is that millions of dogs are euthanized each year in the United States alone, many of them healthy and adoptable. Cathy is determined to change that.

“We live in a society where dogs are often seen as disposable,” Cathy explains. “But every dog deserves a chance at life. I dream of a world where every dog has a home and where no dog is ever put down simply because they are unwanted.”

To achieve this dream, Cathy focuses on rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters, where they are often given just days or even hours before being euthanized. Keely’s Dog Rescue works closely with these shelters to identify dogs that are at the highest risk and bring them into the rescue’s care. Once in the safety of Keely’s Dog Rescue, the dogs receive the medical care, love, and attention they need to recover from their trauma and prepare for their new lives.

The Rescue Process: Saving Lives One Dog at a Time

Rescuing a dog is no simple task. It requires time, resources, and a deep understanding of each dog’s individual needs. At Keely’s Dog Rescue, the process begins with identifying dogs that are in immediate danger of being euthanized. These dogs are often scared, sick, or have behavioral issues that make them less likely to be adopted.

Once a dog is brought into the rescue, they undergo a thorough medical evaluation. Many of the dogs Cathy rescues have never received proper veterinary care and suffer from various health issues, including malnutrition, heartworm, and injuries. Keely’s Dog Rescue ensures that each dog receives the necessary treatment, whether it’s surgery, medication, or rehabilitation.

In addition to physical care, the emotional well-being of the dogs is a top priority. Many of the dogs have experienced abuse or neglect, leaving them fearful and anxious. Cathy and her team work patiently with each dog, helping them build trust and confidence. Foster homes play a crucial role in this process, providing a safe and loving environment where the dogs can heal and learn to socialize with humans and other animals.

The Impact of Adoption

The ultimate goal of Keely’s Dog Rescue is to find forever homes for the dogs they save. Cathy believes that adoption is the key to ending the cycle of euthanasia. Every dog that is adopted opens up space in the rescue for another dog to be saved.

“Adoption is not just about giving a dog a home,” Cathy says. “It’s about giving them a second chance at life. When you adopt a rescue dog, you’re not just saving that dog; you’re making room for another dog to be saved.”

Cathy and her team work diligently to match each dog with the right family. They take into consideration the dog’s personality, needs, and the adopter’s lifestyle to ensure a successful and lasting adoption. The rescue also provides ongoing support to adopters, offering advice and resources to help them care for their new furry family member.

The Community Behind the Mission

While Cathy Sewell is the heart and soul of Keely’s Dog Rescue, she is quick to acknowledge that the rescue’s success is a team effort. Volunteers, foster families, donors, and supporters all play a vital role in saving dogs and finding them homes.

“Our volunteers are amazing,” Cathy says. “They give their time, their homes, and their hearts to these dogs. We couldn’t do what we do without them.”

Foster families are especially important to the rescue’s mission. They provide temporary homes for dogs while they await adoption, giving them the love and care they need to thrive. Fostering is a rewarding experience, and Cathy encourages anyone who loves dogs to consider becoming a foster.

“We’re always in need of foster homes,” Cathy explains. “Even if you can’t adopt, fostering is a wonderful way to make a difference. You get to help a dog in need and be a part of their journey to finding a forever home.”

How You Can Help

Keely’s Dog Rescue relies on the generosity of the community to continue its life-saving work. There are many ways to get involved and support the rescue’s mission. Donations are always needed to cover the costs of medical care, food, and supplies for the dogs. Every dollar goes directly to helping the dogs in the rescue’s care.

In addition to financial contributions, Cathy encourages people to consider adopting or fostering a dog. With so many dogs in need, there is always a perfect match waiting to be found. By opening your heart and home to a rescue dog, you become a part of the solution to ending euthanasia and giving dogs a second chance at life.

A Future Filled with Hope

Cathy Sewell’s dedication to saving dogs is nothing short of inspiring. Through Keely’s Dog Rescue, she has given over 900 dogs the chance to live, love, and be loved. But her work is far from over. With every dog she saves, Cathy moves one step closer to her dream of a world where no dog will ever have to be euthanized and where every dog will have a home.

“I believe that one day, we will live in a world where every dog is safe and loved,” Cathy says with conviction. “Until then, I will keep fighting for them.”

For those who share Cathy’s love for dogs and want to make a difference, there’s no better time to get involved. Whether through adoption, fostering, volunteering, or donating, you can help Cathy Sewell and Keely’s Dog Rescue continue their mission to save lives and create a brighter future for dogs in need.
